Meet
Dr. Tamara McFarland

Licensed Professional Counselor & Supervisor

Dr. McFarland is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor as well as a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. Tamara is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator trained by Dr. Brené Brown and her team. She loves learning about how the concept of shame shapes our lives and how vulnerability sets us free. Tamara studied marriage and family dynamics in her doctorate program. She is certified in the Gottman marriage counseling method I & II and utilizes Sue Johnson's theory of Emotionally Focused Therapy for repairing attachment in couples work.

Tamara received her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Brigham Young University and her Master's Degree in Counseling and Supervision from Texas Woman's University. Tamara received her Doctorate in Counseling from  Texas A&M Commerce.

Tamara is trained in EMDR therapy I & II which is used for treating trauma. She completed level one of the Trauma Resilience Model®- TRM training from the Trauma Resource Institute with Elaine Miller-Kraus. She was trained in Post Induction Therapy by Pia Mellody of the Meadows in Wickenburg Arizona. This therapy addresses the trauma of childhood and attachment that continue to show up in our adult lives and relationships. Tamara believes in the need for therapist to continue to learn grow, integrating cutting edge treatments through training. She is currently finished up her SE (Somatic Experiencing) certification and her certifications in sex addiction, intimacy anorexia and partner betrayal trauma through the American Association of Sexual Addiction Therapists.  She is also a CSAT Candidate.

Tamara also partners with Karen Stone in providing men and women's groups.  They also partner in Connections Quest Retreats.  A women's retreat program centered in healing and self-care. These retreats are local as well as international. The group has visited Ireland and Italy with plans to travel to Bali in 2026.

Tamara trained as a play therapist in her master's program at Texas Women's University and continues to work with children and adolescent and to supervise play therapy interns.  Tamara spends more of her time now helping parents address underlying parenting issues and to repair attachment bonds with their children and teens. She works with substance abuse, sexual and pornography addiction and understands the trauma underlying the addiction and the betrayal trauma of partners. She also understand that addiction affects the whole family and works to provide wrap around treatment for the entire family.  Currently Dr. McFarland is studying Somatic Experiencing therapy which involves addressing how trauma is held in the body and how emotions affect pain and the health of the body. She has interest in the neurobiology of trauma, emotions and behavior. Tamara is a blood cancer survivor and values every moment of life. She is passionate about helping people, She sees every individual as precious and believes everyone has purpose. She loves the people that she works with. Tamara loves dogs and has two golden retrievers and a certified as Therapy Dogs and a new baby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. You may meet Chloe her 12 year old or Mia her 6 year old and her new baby Sophie. Tamara has been married for 36 years and has two married sons. She has 7 grandchildren who are the loves of her life. She loves to garden, travel, journal, and is learning about pottery making and silversmithing.
