Meet

Dr. Tamara McFarland

Licensed Professional Counselor & Supervisor

 

 

Dr. McFarland is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor. She received her bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University and her Doctorate from East Texas A&M University. In her doctoral program she focused on Marriage and Family Relationships with an eye to the family system as a whole and with an emphasis on attachment wounding.

 

Tamara is an SE (Somatic experiencing) trained therapist, working with how trauma is held in the body and nervous system. She is certified in Sex Addiction Therapy, Intimacy Anorexia Therapy, and Partner Betrayal Trauma Therapy by AASAT. She is currently completing training as a CSAT (Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist) through IITAP.

She is certified in the Gottman marriage counseling method and utilizes Sue Johnson's theory of Emotionally Focused Therapy for repairing attachment in couple’s work. Tamara is trained in EMDR therapy which is used for treating trauma.

 

Tamara studied with Pia Mellody of the Meadows in Wickenburg Arizona and is trained in her Post Induction Theory for addressing childhood trauma, attachment, and addiction. She also studied with Dr. Brene Brown and is certified in the Daring Way which addresses the concept of shame.

 

Tamara originally trained as a play therapist and maintains the certification of Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, believing that it still informs her work with families and parenting. She works with all areas of trauma, addictions including pornography and unwanted sexual behavior. She understands the trauma underlying the addiction and the impact of addiction on children and partners of the addict. Dr. McFarland runs emotional intimacy and addiction groups for men and support and growth groups for women.
